Leading Edge Component

The leading edge component combines a solid part of carbon fiber with a honeycomb part with core of paper.

Section of the leading edge sample with the three areas with defects.

Inspection of the component on the honeycomb part

Air-Coupled C-Scan of the sample’s inspection in the honeycomb area.

The criterion for defect sizing was an amplitude drop of -6 dB.

Inspection of the component in the carbon fiber solid part in the nose area

Air-Coupled C-Scan of the solid CFRP laminate part in the curved area (nose).

The criterion for defect sizing was -6 dB amplitude drop. The scanning resolution was 1 mm, therefore the measurement accuracy shown is 1 mm.

Conclusions of the sample’s inspection

After analyzing the results, we can conclude that the AirScope system has the required sensitivity to detect all defects induced in the analyzed sample, and the resolution of the transducers is enough to correctly size all reference defects.
